BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A first-of-its-kind ferry made here in Whatcom County is now operating a bit farther down the coast.

Bellingham-based All American Marine announced the launch of the world’s first hydrogen-powered commercial vessel called “Sea Change.” The 70-foot, 75-passenger ferry started making trips in San Francisco last week as part of the city’s plan to phase out diesel-powered vessels.

All American Marine’s President and COO Ron Wille says that the ship is the first of its kind and is built on tech that already existed.

“The really neat thing is – when that boat’s running – the only byproduct that you get from the hydrogen is a little bit of steam,” Wille said in an interview with MyBellinghamNow.com. “It’s really amazing to see something on the water that really has zero pollution. That is such a huge step in the right direction.”

Gov. Jay Inslee called the ferry “the most exciting vessel in Washington” in his 2022 visit and says it’s a key step in the state’s effort to become a national “Hydrogen Hub” for clean energy technology. It comes as Washington State Ferries recently announced plans for a new hybrid-electric fleet to help reach its goal of zero emissions by 2050.
