WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – This past 4th of July weekend was a dangerous stretch on the roads for Whatcom County drivers.

Whatcom County Jail booking records show that 24 people were arrested for DUIs between Thursday and Sunday. That’s nearly as many as the previous 10 days combined before Independence Day.

17 of those 24 arrests took place on Thursday and Friday, but the numbers fell each day until there was just one DUI arrest on Sunday, July 7.

The Bellingham Police Department says one driver they arrested for driving under the influence over the weekend ran from officers and hid under someone’s shed until a police K-9 found them.

BPD added that another DUI driver caused what it calls a “significant collision.”

On top of those incidents, the department says it took over 80 fireworks-related calls between July 3rd and 5th.
