WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Libraries in the Whatcom County area have equipped themselves with sensory kits to accommodate for their more sensitive patrons.

The Whatcom County Library System (WCLS) announced Thursday that sensory kits for people with autism will be available for use when visiting a county branch location. The kits include noise reduction headphones, glare reducing sunglasses, visual communication cards for non or minimally speaking children and a tangle fidget toy.

April is Autism Acceptance Month and WCLS Youth Services Assistant Angelina Kuchar stated that the kits affirm the system’s commitment to being an inclusive and welcoming space for everyone. These kits are made to support the needs of autistic children and adults, the ability to borrow from one of these kits can enhance a visit to the library for those living with autism.

To learn more, check out Autism Society as they celebrate their sixth annual #celebratedifferences campaign in honor of Autism Acceptance Month, working to educate others and destigmatize those living with autism spectrum disorder.

Kits are available at the information center of each library. All WCLS locations outside Bellingham’s city limits has one kit each on hand.
