Whatcom County Jail inmate transported to hospital following attempt to take their own life

BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – An inmate at the Whatcom County Jail was transported to the hospital after trying to take their own life.

Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Deb Slater said that corrections deputies discovered the inmate on Sunday at about 9:30 p.m.

They had attempted to hang themselves using a bedsheet while alone in their cell. The deputies who discovered the inmate performed CPR until medical assistance arrived. The inmate was transported to PeaceHealth St. Joseph’s Medical Center.

The Bellingham Police Department has been asked to conduct an independent investigation into the matter.

Sheriff Donnell Tanksley provided the following statement:

“Our thoughts are with the individual and their loved ones during this difficult time. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges and struggles faced by those in our care. We bear that in mind and will continue to prioritize the safety, well-being and support of all those in our custody.”
