Washington wins education funding lawsuits against Trump administration

OLYMPIA, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Washington has secured a pair of legal victories in two of its lawsuits against the Trump administration.

The state Attorney General’s Office announced this week that federal judges blocked two attempts to cut education funding on Monday.

The first concerned roughly $1 billion in funding for mental health programs that was discontinued in April.

KGMI previously reported that the U.S. Department of Education claimed the grants conflicted with the administration’s priorities.

But a federal judge in Seattle issued a preliminary injunction on Monday to prevent the cuts from taking effect in three educational service districts across the state and the University of Washington.

Later, a federal judge in Oregon issued a separate order to block the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services from defunding sexual health education programs for teens.

My Bellingham Now previously reported that the department pulled the funding in September because the program curriculum mentioned diverse gender identities.

Washington receives more than $2.5 million every year to educate teens on pregnancy and STD prevention through one of the programs.
