NORTH BEND, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – New technology could drastically reduce highway collisions across the state.

Washington State Patrol (WSP) says it’s testing a device in patrol cars that will deliver real-time digital alerts to nearby motorists when a trooper’s emergency lights are on.

The alerts will automatically pop up for drivers using navigation apps like Waze, Google Maps or Apple Maps and on the dashboards of some newer cars.

WSP says the alerts are proven to reduce collision risks by up to 90%, giving drivers crucial extra warning time.

“This technology bridges the gap between what the law requires and what actually happens on the road,” said Project Manager Haley Shipman in a release. “When our lights activate, Safety Cloud gives drivers critical extra time to anticipate us and safely react – protecting both our personnel and the public we serve.”

The technology, called the Safety Cloud, is already used by thousands of agencies nationwide, including some fire departments around the region.

“Roadside line-of-duty deaths are preventable tragedies,” added Shipman. “By combining this technology with public awareness, we’re creating safer roads for everyone.”

The Safety Cloud is currently being piloted 30 miles east of Seattle in North Bend, with the potential for expansion in the future.
