THURSTON COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Parents are being urged to check their cupboards amid a nationwide infant formula recall tied to a rare but serious illness.

The Washington State Department of Health said the CDC and FDA are investigating a botulism outbreak involving powdered infant formula produced by Nara Organics.

An infant in Thurston County was hospitalized and treated as one of three cases across the country linked to the outbreak.

Infant botulism is a rare illness that can weaken muscles in babies less than six months old. It can take up to several weeks for symptoms to develop, which include constipation and breathing problems.

Nara Organics’ product was sold nationwide through Target stores, Target.com and Nara.com.

Anyone who recently bought the recalled formula is urged to throw it away or return it to where it was purchased from.
