WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Health officials in Whatcom County are reminding the public to steer clear of bats.

Health and Community Services says two bats that were found in south Bellingham and near Sumas tested positive for rabies this week.

The department says, despite the discoveries, there is no outbreak or heightened risk to the surrounding neighborhoods, as rabid bats have been found in all areas of the county over the years.

Bats rarely interact with people, but encounters are more common during the summer.

The department is urging anyone who is bitten or scratched by a bat to immediately wash the wound with soap and water, call Whatcom County Health and Community Services at 360-778-6000 and contact your health care provider.

It notes that bites or scratches might be hard to see or easily missed with physical examination.

Rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms develop, but it is preventable with prompt treatment after an exposure.

Health and Community Services is also reminding pet owners to keep their dogs and cats up to date on their rabies vaccinations.
