WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Traveling on I-5 this weekend and next week may take some extra planning as the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) performs roadwork in Bellingham and Seattle.

This weekend, WSDOT will have crews working on I-5 in Seattle between I-90 and NE 45th Street in downtown Seattle starting at midnight on Friday, Aug 15. This stretch of I-5 northbound will be closed until early Monday morning; however, the express lanes will remain open during this time to provide an alternative route for bypassing the construction.

Drivers should expect delays while driving through Seattle northbound, as events near the closure zone will bring thousands of drivers to the area.

According to WSDOT, work on the southbound lanes of I-5 will continue this fall and winter.

Bellingham will be seeing a mix of roadwork starting this weekend as well.

At 8 p.m. on Sunday night, northbound drivers will be shifted to a temporary two-lane bypass in the median just south of Bellingham as WSDOT continues work on the fish passage project near MP 241. The shift will take place until 5 a.m. the following morning. Crews will start to excavate and remove an old culvert to install a larger culvert to allow fish to swim beneath the interstate.

Closures on I-5 in north Bellingham will begin on Sunday, Aug. 17 at 8 p.m. for the following three nights as crews pave the road.

On Monday, Aug. 18, WSDOT says the left lane of southbound I-5 will be closed from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Tuesday between the Guide Meridian and Sunset Drive.

On Tuesday, the northbound lanes will be completely closed between Sunset Drive and the Guide Meridian starting at 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. Wednesday.

And Wednesday night, the southbound lanes will be completely closed between Northwest Avenue and the Guide Meridian, also starting at 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. Thursday.

Drivers should expect delays and find alternate routes during those nighttime hours.

Stay up to date with road closures and traffic alerts at the WSDOT website.
