BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Bellingham’s network of electric vehicle charging stations is expanding through a new round of state grants.

The Washington State Department of Commerce is handing out over $37 million to build more than 750 EV charging ports across the state.

It selected three projects in Bellingham that will bring four regular ports and 12 fast-charging ports.

Two charging stations will be available for public use: one at the Bakerview Fred Meyer and another at the Shell gas station on N. Lake Samish Dr. The third will be located at an affordable housing complex on N. State Street.

The charging ports are expected to be active by late 2027.

It comes as Bellingham announced it’s launching a carshare cooperative that will boost access to electric vehicles for low-income residents.

According to a recent study by Electric Power Research Institute, Washington EV drivers save an average of 73% per mile on fuel costs. Those savings were found to be the most in the country due to the state’s high gas prices and relatively low electricity rates.
