BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A central Washington man was arrested after leading police on a highway chase out of Bellingham.

Bellingham Police Lt. Claudia Murphy says it began when officers arrived at the scene of a domestic assault call on Saturday afternoon.

They found that a man had become violent after he and two others had spent time drinking alcohol downtown.

The victims told police that the man had tried to put their car in park and reverse while they were driving back before physically assaulting both of them.

The man drove away just as officers arrived at the scene and proceeded to flee south on I-5 in a manner police described as “reckless.”

He eventually drove over a set of spike strips near Alger before police conducted a PIT maneuver and his car slid into a ditch.

The man, identified as a 24-year-old Soap Lake resident, was arrested on a litany of charges, including felony DUI since he’s had four previous convictions.

He remains at the Whatcom County Jail without bail.

If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic/sexual violence, call (877)-715-1563 to reach the Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Services of Whatcom County (DVSAS) or by calling (800)-656-HOPE (4673) to reach the National Sexual Assault Hotline
