MOUNT BAKER, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Closures are on the horizon for the last few miles of the Mount Baker Highway.
The U.S. Forest Service says that the road will fully close for winter preparations between the Silver Fir Campground and Picture Lake.
Closures will be in effect this Wednesday, Sept. 30 and Thursday, as well as next Monday, Oct. 5 and Tuesday between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Recreationists looking to get one last hike from Artist Point or Heather Meadows are encouraged to get up the road prior to the closure time. Anyone who chooses to go for a day hike won’t be allowed access down the mountain until 4 p.m.
An official closure date for the road to Artist Point has not yet been announced.
The National Weather Service in Seattle reports Mount Baker is forecast to receive up to a foot and a half of snow this week.
Areas near Artist Point have already seen a light dusting of snow, but they’re more likely to get rain showers Tuesday, Sept. 29 and Wednesday.
