WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – The Trump administration is restoring over $100 million in funding for K-12 schools in Washington.
The Washington state Attorney General’s Office says Washington and 23 other states have reached an agreement requiring the U.S. Department of Education to release funds it had frozen earlier this summer.
The legal victory frees up nearly $137 million in funding for Washington schools and more than $13 million for the state’s adult education system.
“Making sure our kids have what they need to learn should be something we can all agree on,” AG Nick Brown said. “I’m pleased that we resolved this case quickly and restored the vital education funding the Trump administration unlawfully tried to cancel.”
My Bellingham Now previously reported that Washington joined a lawsuit in July against the Department of Education and the Office of Management and Budget for withholding $7 billion in federal grants.
The grants fund six longstanding programs that offer support for after-school learning, teacher preparation and students learning English.
Under the agreement, the Department of Education has to release the funds by Oct. 3 at the latest.
