Northwest Sports Update: M’s eye division lead, Storm to learn playoff fate, HS football Week 2 rankings released and more

/Dave Walker

Mariners News

The red-hot Mariners have a chance to take the division lead tonight. They’re hosting the Los Angeles Angels in the first of a four-game series.

The M’s beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 in 13 innings last night to win their fifth straight game. Leo Rivas led off the bottom of the 13th with a walk off two-run homer to help Seattle complete the series sweep.

Logan Gilbert gave up one run over four and two-thirds innings and the Mariners bullpen allowed just three baserunners over the next eight innings. Emerson Hancock finished it off with two perfect innings to earn the win.

With the Astros’ loss to the Blue Jays earlier today, the Mariners sit just half a game back from first place in the AL West. They could move into a tie with Houston tonight if they can get a win over the Angels with Bryce Miller on the mound.

Coverage begins at 5:30 and first pitch is at 6:40 on KGMI.

Storm News

The Storm will find out their opponent for the opening round of the playoffs tonight.

Seattle clinched a playoff berth on Tuesday with a win over the Golden State Valkyries in their last regular game of the season. It was the eighth, and final, spot in the WNBA postseason.

But the Storm could jump into the seventh seed if the Valkyries lose against the league-leading Minnesota Lynx tonight. Seattle would play either the Atlanta Dream or the Las Vegas Aces in the 2-7 matchup if the Valkyries lose, or the Storm would face the Lynx in the 1-8 matchup if the Valkyries win.

That game tips off at 5:00.

Seahawks News

The Seahawks’ secondary is in major flux heading into this Sunday’s game in Pittsburgh. Coach Mike Macdonald was noncommittal when asked whether Riq Woolen would start at cornerback after he misplayed two throws on the 49ers’ game winning drive last weekend.

Josh Jobe, the team’s No. 3 corner heading into the season, could have an expanded role at Woolen’s expense.

Meanwhile, Seattle’s top corner and 2x Pro Bowler Devon Witherspoon sat out of practice yesterday with a knee injury. His status for Week 2 is currently up in the air.

Speaking of injuries, the Seahawks’ division rival just suffered a major one. San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan says quarterback Brock Purdy is unlikely to play against the Saints on Sunday. He also said Purdy could miss multiple weeks as he recovered from toe and left shoulder injuries he suffered against the Seahawks last Sunday.

The Niners also placed star tight end George Kittle on the injured reserve earlier this week, as the injuries already start to pile up for a San Fran team that was decimated by them last year.

Meanwhile, Week 2 of the NFL season kicks off with Thursday Night Football tonight. The Green Bay Packers are hosting the Washington Commanders in a matchup of 1-0 teams.

Coverage begins at 4:30 and kickoff is at 5:15 on KPUG.
