Mariners News

The Mariners secured their series against the best team in baseball this afternoon.

They beat the Atlanta Braves 3-1 to wrap up their homestand on a high note.

Cal Raleigh got things started in the third inning when he scored Jhonny Pereda on a ground ball. Julio Rodriguez added to the lead in the sixth when he crushed a solo shot to put the M’s up two.

The Braves responded in the eighth with a sac fly to pull within one run. But Cole Young drove home a crucial insurance run in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single that scored Josh Naylor from second.

Bryan Woo finished with nine strikeouts over six shutout innings of one-hit ball to earn his second win of the season.

The Mariners recovered from getting swept by the Royals over the weekend to take two out of three games against the Braves, who owned the best record in the majors entering today.

The M’s have the day off tomorrow before kicking off a seven-game road trip against the Chicago White Sox on Friday.

Meanwhile, one of the Mariners’ top rivals just got some devastating news.

Houston Astros third baseman Carlos Correa announced today that he’s undergoing season-ending surgery to repair a torn tendon in his left ankle. The 31-year-old said he was going through his normal routine in the batting cage yesterday when he took a swing and “just felt it pop.”

It’s yet another blow to an Astros team that has now placed 15 players on the injured list this season, which include ace Hunter Brown, All-Star closer Josh Hader and All-Star shortstop Jeremy Peña.

Kraken News

The Kraken’s pick in the upcoming NHL Draft is officially set.

They earned the No. 7 overall pick in last night’s draft lottery. Seattle fell a spot after finishing with the sixth-worst record in the NHL, but it is a better pick than each of their two previous seasons, where they picked eighth overall.

They also have the 26th overall pick from a trade with Tampa Bay.

The Maple Leafs, Sharks and Canucks earned the top three picks in next month’s draft, respectively.

Prep Baseball News

Squalicum’s baseball team kept its season alive last night.

The Storm cruised past Marysville-Pilchuck 11-1 to make it out of the 2A district tournament play-in game. They’ll now face top-seeded Sehome in Anacortes tomorrow night.

Meanwhile, Meridian is fighting for its season tonight as it plays Granite Falls at 4 pm in a loser-out match in the 1A district tourney.

WWU Vikings News

One of Western’s top golfers is heading to nationals.

Senior Lauren Lee earned one of two individual qualifying spots for the national championship at regionals yesterday. It’s the All-American’s second straight season that she’s done so after tying for 4th place last year.

Meanwhile, Western’s softball team is gearing up for the start of their playoffs. They’re facing Northwest Nazarene at noon tomorrow in the first round of the GNAC Championships tournament in Ellensburg.

It comes after the Viks just had six players named to the All-Conference Team.  Junior third baseman Maleah Andrews won GNAC Player of the Year, freshman pitcher Alanna Wirtala won Freshman of the Year and sophomore catcher EmmaJoy Wise won Newcomer of the Year.

Senior shortstop Hailey Rath also highlighted the selections with a first-team nod.
