Mariners News
The Mariners are looking to clinch their series against the Padres in Game 2 tonight. They already wrapped up first-ever Vedder Cup with last night’s 9-6 win over San Diego.
Cal Raleigh hit his major league-leading 50th home run of the season and celebrated after the game by hoisting the custom guitar trophy designed by Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder himself. Raleigh joined Mickey Mantle as the only switch-hitters to hit 50 homers in a season, and he became just the eighth player in major league history to reach the half-century mark in August.
Bryce Miller gave up four runs in the second inning, but battled back to follow it up with three scoreless innings. Jorge Polanco went 3-4 with a home run and four RBI to lead the offensive charge for the M’s.
Seattle still has yet to lose to San Diego, with the second-to-last game of their regular season series coming tonight with Luis Castillo on the mound. Coverage begins at 5:30 and first pitch is at 6:40 on KPUG.
Across the division, the Athletic reports that longtime utilityman Dylan Moore is joining the Texas Rangers on a minor league deal.
Meanwhile, the Mariners, along with the rest of MLB, released their schedule for the 2026 regular season today. They’ll open the year at home against the Cleveland Guardians on Thursday, March 26.
Seahawks News
The Seahawks finalized their official 53-man roster today.
The most notable cut was veteran receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, who the team signed to a one-year, $4 million contract in March. The 30-year-old was released earlier today even though the team guaranteed him $3 million for 2025.
Valdez-Scantling’s departure comes after he was outperformed over the summer by rookie fifth-round pick Tory Horton, among others.
Seattle also traded second-year offensive tackle Michael Jerrell to the Atlanta Falcons in exchange for a conditional 2027 seventh-round draft pick.
Storm News
The Storm are continuing their road trip tonight with a match against the shorthanded Indiana Fever.
Indiana has been without star point guard Caitlin Clark since she suffered a right groin sprain on July 15. The team is also dealing with season-ending injuries to three other guards in its rotation.
The Storm will look to capitalize on the Fevers’ poor health with a chance to win their fourth straight game. They’re coming off a tight win over the Washington Mystics on Sunday that ended with Nneka Ogwumike hitting a game-winner at the buzzer to finish with 30 points.
It’s Seattle’s second-to-last road game of the year as the season nears a close with just two weeks remaining. Today’s game tips off at 4:00 from Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
College Sports News
U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell sent a letter to leaders at the more than 350 Division I schools across the country yesterday, warning of a two-tier college system with haves and have-nots if a proposed bill to regulate the industry passes without changes.
In the letter, Cantwell says the SCORE Act would “incentivize a Power 2 conference system that will create inequities for other conferences and leave behind small to mid-sized schools.”
The “Power 2” she references is the Big Ten and Southeastern Conference, which share the decision-making power for the future of the College Football Playoff. The playoff’s nearly $8 billion media-rights deal makes it the single-largest financial driver of all college athletics.
The SCORE act would provide the NCAA a limited antitrust exemption, override state laws designed to regulate name, image, likeness payments and prevent athletes from becoming employees of their universities. The House is expected to vote on it next month.
