WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Historic flooding is on its last legs in Whatcom and Skagit counties.

Updated forecasts show that levels on the Nooksack and Skagit Rivers have both crested and are on the decline.

The Nooksack is currently well below the action stage in all parts of Whatcom County.

Skagit County officials have lifted all flood-related evacuation notices as the Skagit River has receded below flood stage. Residents are encouraged to return home safely while remaining cautious of potential hazards, including road closures and contaminated floodwater.

Still, a flood warning has been extended near Mount Vernon until Friday morning.

River levels are expected to continue receding and should remain below flood stage at least through Christmas Day.

Lower river levels have led to the reopening of Fir Island Road, which is the main arterial road for residents of Fir Island.

Skagit County Fire District 3 warns that other roads across the island are likely covered in debris and are urging drivers to use caution.
