SAN JUAN ISLANDS, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Ferry schedules to Anacortes and the San Juan Islands are getting a much-needed update this winter.

The Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT) says vehicle reservations for the new winter sailing schedule will open on Tuesday, Oct. 29. According to the WSDOT, the current schedules have not been updated in over a decade.

Washington State Ferries (WSF) says the outdated schedules have become unreliable for locals and tourists, even causing the ferries to arrive late in some cases. WSF has worked on updating the schedule for nearly two years, using public outreach and a community task force group to better reflect the public’s needs.

It also comes with the help of Gov. Jay Inslee, who last month approved emergency funding to increase interisland ferry service during the winter season.

The new schedule will go into effect on Sunday, Dec. 29.
