WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Every year, on the first Tuesday in August, communities celebrate National Night Out. Neighborhoods throughout Whatcom County may participate with block parties or barbeques, while Birch Bay Beach Park is hosting an event open to all.

So what’s National Night Out? Why should you care? Let’s tackle the second part first.

At the Sheriff’s Office Division of Emergency Management (DEM) we’re all about preparing for and responding to disasters. An example of preparation is our Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), which teaches basic skills to be able to respond in a disaster to help neighbors or co-workers. Another key component is establishing relationships – in the workplace, with neighbors, partner agencies and first responders.

For these relationships to develop and those alliances to endure, trust and credibility are vital – for DEM as well as local law enforcement and first responders.

Whatcom County hosts National Night Out as a way for neighbors to become better acquainted and build stronger relationships. The folks next door may be our first line of support, whether following a flood or pushing back against crime. If your neighborhood is hosting a block party, check it out. We’re more likely get help – or feel comfortable providing it – if it’s someone you’ve seen around the neighborhood or met over burger and watermelon.

So back to the first part of the question, what’s National Night Out? It’s a chance to build community as well as become more familiar with those who serve our communities: you’re invited to join us at Birch Bay Beach Park (7930 Birch Bay Drive) from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4. Bring your kids, bring your camera, bring your questions!
