MT. BAKER, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – With the Cascades getting pummeled by snow this week, many are asking the same question: when will the Mount Baker Ski Area officially open for the season?

Unfortunately, the answer remains up in the air at this time

The ski area says it’s hoping to have Passholder Day as early as Saturday and the official Opening Day on Sunday.

The mountain has enough snow to open, but skiers and snowboarders currently have no way to reach it.

The Mount Baker Highway remains closed from Canyon Creek to the ski area due to landslides and flooding.

Director of Mountain Operations Sam Llobet says it will stay closed through at least Friday.

“We’re working diligently with our partners at the Washington State Department of Transportation to work through the challenges of getting the road open,” Llobet said in a video update posted to the ski area’s website.

The ski area and WSDOT are both asking people to respect the highway closure as crews continue to make it safe to travel across.

Mount Baker Ski Area will continue to provide updates on opening day through its website and social media accounts.
