BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A man is in custody after attempting to leave the scene of an accident that he caused.

Bellingham Police spokesperson Megan Peters says officers were called to the crash on Saturday, April 20.

The driver of a pickup truck told officers that he had been rear-ended by a van while waiting at a light on Holly St. The force of the crash briefly knocked the driver unconscious, and he was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Officers then observed the driver of the van attempt to leave the area, but the van ended up coming to a rest against a pole near F St.

The van driver, identified as a 52-year-old man, smelled of alcohol when officers contacted him.

The driver faces both a DUI and a vehicular assault charge.
