LYNDEN, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Lynden’s School Board Director has announced her resignation.

Tonya Hickman made the announcement late last week during the board’s Jan. 8 meeting.

“It has been an honor to serve alongside individuals willing to give their time, wrestle with difficult issues and engage thoughtfully on behalf of families of the district and students entrusted to it,” she told the board members.

Hickman won the election for the board seat in 2022, citing a need to promote local voices in Lynden’s education system.

She plans to leave submit her letter of resignation to the board in the near future, adding that after her tenure ends, she’ll continue to serve the community in a different capacity.

“In this season, I feel called to invest more time directly and serving our local families,” she added. “And this is where I will continue to focus my energy.”

Board President Jim Verburg praised Hickman’s work on the board during the meeting, adding she has been an inspiration for him…

“It’s been an honor to serve with you,” Verburg told Hickman. “You’re one of the inspirations why I chose to run anyway, in the first place.”

Her term, which expires in 2029, will be taken over by someone appointed by the school board.
