BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A Lummi Nation Police officer was hospitalized and a suspect remains at large following a shooting.

The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office says that a person drove their car into a ditch on N. Red River Road just before 1 a.m. on Monday, July 28. When an officer approached them, the unidentified suspect shot them several times before running off.

Several roads were shut down as multiple agencies searched for the suspect. The injured officer was hospitalized and has undergone surgery, but their condition is unknown at this time.

In response to the shooting, the Lummi Indian Business Council will be closing their offices until further notice. Lummi Nation Chair Anthony Hillaire released the following statement:

“Our hearts are heavy today. One of our own was harmed while serving and protecting our community. We stand with our officer, their family, and all those working to bring accountability and healing. In times like this, we must come together as one people – strong, prayerful, and united in care for one another.”

No details about the suspect have been released.
