WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Super Bowl weekend is here and many of you probably already have plans for Sunday. Thankfully, there are plenty of non-football related activities happening in our area on Friday and Saturday. So, head out and experience some local culture before you wear a hole in the couch for the big game.

Whatcom County is known nationally for its brewing scene and now a brewery in Bellingham is in the running for quite an honor. Otherlands Beer is one of twenty finalists for USA Today’s Best Brewpubs in the U.S. award. The good folks at Otherlands will likely say it is an honor just to be nominated, but feel free to give them a vote if you’re so inclined.

Otherlands specializes in traditional lagers. They also serve inspired central European food at their cozy Sunnyland location. Go to otherlandsbeer.com to check out their beer list and menu.

Here is something for all the couples out there. The Upfront Theatre is hosting a Couple’s Workshop. Take a romantic partner, a friend, a co-worker or anyone else you can think of to learn how to say “Yes, and…” You will spend time laughing together while strengthening your relationship and improv skills.

Mindful Connections for Couples: Building Deeper Bonds through Play is Saturday, Feb. 8 at noon. To book a spot, go to theupfront.com.

The folks in the theatre department at Lynden Christian High School will be showing their final productions of Disney’s “High School Musical” this Friday and Saturday. Tickets for this show are available online here.

If you are a fan of classical guitar, you are in luck. It is International Guitar Night at the Mount Baker Theatre on Saturday. The show features an incredible lineup of guitarists including Alexandra Whittingham, Niwel Tsumbu and Lulo Reinhardt, the grandnephew of Django Reinhardt.

International Guitar Night starts at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are going fast. Go to mountbakertheatre.com for all the details.

For all the bookworms in Whatcom County, there is a great event happening at Village Books in Lynden on Saturday. Author Nancy Canyon will be in town to talk about her new book Stuck: A Season on a Fire Lookout. Stuck tells the story of Canyon’s time with her husband in 1971 working at the Corral Hill Lookout in Idaho.

Canyon is a Bellingham resident and holds an MFA from Pacific Lutheran University. The event starts at 2 p.m. Tickets are $5 or $22 with a copy of the book. Go to villagebooks.com for all the details.

Our featured live show this week is Friday night, Feb. 7 at the Shakedown in downtown Bellingham. Lightnin’ Luke is a soulful singer and multi-instrumentalist who plays roots, folk and country music. He currently lives in Charleston, South Carolina and plays fiddle for the Bridge City Sinners, but he will be tearing up the stage solo for this one.

Lightnin’ Luke is playing with Coleman Williams and aptly named Serafima and the Shakedowns. The show starts at 9 p.m. For tickets go to shakedownbellingham.com.
