BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A local real estate agent is taking on a world-record endurance challenge to help fight food insecurity

Ethan Hunger is performing his sixth annual “Hunger vs. Hunger” fundraiser for the Bellingham Food Bank this weekend with his biggest test yet.

Starting at 6 pm on Friday, July 24, at Bloedel Donovan Park, Hunger will be trying to break the world record for most super-sprint triathlons completed in 24 hours. A super-sprint is the shortest official triathlon distance, made up of a quarter-mile swim, a 10K bike ride (6.2 miles) and a 2.5K  run (1.55 miles).

Hunger says he had long thought about making a world record attempt, but it wasn’t until his friend Ian Steger, who works for Triathlete magazine, brought it up that he set his sights on this challenge.

“It was January this year and I had been kind of stalling on deciding what I wanted to do,” Hunger told My Bellingham Now. “He had seen an article about a guy who had just set this record and he sent it to me and said ‘What do you think about this?’ And the second he sent that over, I called him back and said ‘This is it, let’s do it.'”

The two friends will be attempting the challenge alongside one another. Hunger says they’re aiming to complete 72 super-sprint triathlons, which would shatter the current record of 54.

Beyond that, his goal is to raise $500,000 for the food bank this year.

You can hear Ethan talk about his challenge and find out how to donate or watch in his interview on KGMI.
