BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Changes to high school graduation requirements in the state could be on the horizon.

A task force has been working on identifying ways to change and improve graduation requirements throughout Washington.

Named FutureReady, the task force found in a 2025 interim report several gaps in how students are prepared to enter the world after K-12 education.

Those include limited definitions of success, access to readiness supports, limited real-world learning and insufficient feedback from students.

Now, FutureReady will seek to create a cohesive plan to navigate these gaps with intent to recommend legislation in 2027.

The task force is working with a number of educational institutions and community partners as well as tribal leaders to create their recommendations.

Current Washington requirements for graduation center around 24 credits have only been fully in effect since 2021.
