BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Bellingham City Council has announced a special meeting to discuss a subdivision variance in south Bellingham.

It comes after the local group Protect Mud Bay Cliffs (PMBC) filed an appeal to the council on June 18, outlining what they say are the dangers of building the new Woods at Viewcrest subdivision in the area.

The subdivision had formerly been approved for a consolidated permit after Bellingham’s Hearing Examiner announced that an Environmental Impact Statement would not be required to move forward.

PMBC then filed the appeal, claiming erosion hazards, landslide activity and ecological fragility. Hearing Examiner Sharon Rice in her ruling said that there was not sufficient evidence for these claims to require that EIS and repeal the Memorandum Determination of Non-Significance (MDNS) from the project.

The hearing for the appeal is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 10, with a final written decision from the council to be issued at a later date.
