BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Work will soon begin to fix a notoriously flood-prone road in Bellingham.

The City of Bellingham said the first phase of its project to alleviate flooding on Iowa Street will kick off next week.

Starting Monday, July 13, crews will begin night work to repair stormwater lines around the southbound I-5 off-ramp at Ohio Street and along Lincoln Street between Kentucky and Ohio streets.

Drivers will see temporary detours and road closures at night for about two weeks.

Phase 1 will focus on the west side of I-5, while Phase 2 addresses the east side and won’t begin for another year or two.

According to the city, Iowa Street floods so easily because it’s a low point where stormwater from several major parts of Bellingham all drain together before reaching Whatcom Creek.
