BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – For decades, carpenter ants have raided wooden structures across the state of Washington.

These mighty ants become active during the spring season and become dormant until cooler temperatures sweep the region in the fall. But while carpenter ants are active, they will commonly build nests by tunneling into wood.

Nests built by carpenter ants can cause structural damage and are the most common wood-destroying organism in the pacific northwest.

Identifying a carpenter ant may be easier than you think, with reproductive varieties having wings. The colors of carpenter ants range from black, red or a mix of black and brown.

Locating a carpenter ant inside of your home, business or outdoor building typically means that a nest has been developed somewhere inside of the structure.

According to Steve Cornwell, owner of Whatcom County-based pest management company Bio Bug, keeping carpenter ants away requires routine checks and property upkeep.

“Removal of wood debris, stumps and trees from near the structure may reduce chances of an infestation,” Cornwell said.

Bio Bug offers inspections, treatment and ongoing preventative services for carpenter ants. According to Cornwell, the staff at Bio Bug is well-versed with dealing with these pesky ants.

“Our staff is licensed, highly trained and participate in regular ongoing education.”

If you find a carpenter ant in your home, business or outdoor structure, contact Bio Bug in Bellingham for a free inspection and quote.
