Carpenter ants and sugar ants pose seasonal challenge for Whatcom County homeowners

BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – As temperatures rise across Whatcom County, carpenter ants and sugar ants are becoming an increasing concern for local homeowners. Pest control experts urge early prevention to avoid costly infestations.

Carpenter ants, one of the most destructive pests in the region, tunnel into damp or decaying wood to establish their nests, often causing significant structural damage over time. Common nesting sites include wall voids, crawl spaces, and water-damaged window frames.

“Carpenter ants don’t eat wood like termites,” said Steve Cornwell, owner of Bio Bug. “They excavate it to create areas for nesting, which can weaken a home’s structural integrity if left unchecked.”

Sugar ants, while less destructive, are a persistent nuisance. Attracted to sweets and moisture, they are often found in kitchens, bathrooms and around pet food dishes. Their small size allows them to easily infiltrate homes through tiny cracks and gaps.

“A lot of people think [sugar] ants are inside due to poor sanitation,” Cornwell said. “In reality, ants are looking for shelter and not just food.”

Bio Bug Pest Management recommends several steps homeowners can take to prevent ant infestations. Sealing entry points, fixing leaky pipes, storing food in airtight containers, and keeping kitchens clean are key first defenses.

For more severe or recurring problems, Bio Bug provides targeted treatment plans. Their approach combines inspection, identification and eco-conscious treatments designed to eliminate nests and create long-term barriers against future infestations.

Homeowners noticing signs of carpenter or sugar ants are encouraged to act quickly, as early intervention is critical to avoiding larger problems during the active spring and summer months.

For more information, residents can contact Bio Bug Pest Management for consultations and preventive services.
