NEWHALEM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A campfire ban is going into effect for the North Cascades.

The North Cascades National Park Service announced the ban is effective Monday, June 29.

No campfires, ignition of wood, briquettes or any fuel in fire pans, pits or barbecue grills are allowed within the park complex. Propane fire pits are also not allowed during the ban.

The complex includes the national park itself, as well as Ross Lake and Lake Chelan’s recreation areas.

Campers can use gas or propane stoves, grills and lanterns but only if no flammable material is within three feet of the device. There also must be a switch or way to turn off the flame immediately on any device used.

The burn ban is being instituted to lower chances of human-caused fire as the summer shapes up to be warmer and drier this year.
