BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Bellingham residents have a chance to weigh in on a pair of upcoming ballot measures, one of which that could decide how the mayor is paid.
The Bellingham City Council is holding two public hearings on proposed charter amendments at its regular meeting on Monday, Sept. 28.
One would eliminate the requirement that the mayor be the highest paid city employee. It would instead amend the county charter to have the mayor’s salary decided upon by the same commission that sets the city council’s pay, which is done every eight years.
Bellingham Mayor Kim Lund is currently making just under $237,000 in 2026.
The other amendment seeks to streamline the city’s contracting process by allowing the mayor to designate someone to sign contracts for them. It would also allow the city to use electronic signatures by eliminating other existing requirements.
Monday’s public hearing takes place inside the council chambers at 7 p.m.
