SEATTLE, Wash. – Seattle’s Woodland Park Zoo is mourning the death of one of its beloved animals.

KOMO reports the orangutan named Melati passed away while recovering from surgery to remove cancerous growths.

Mammal curator Martin Ramirez says Melati was laid-back and inquisitive and loved to use her soapy bucket and sponge to scrub the floors of her enclosure.

Tomorrow would have been her 50th birthday.

Melati is survived by her two offspring who still live at the zoo.
