BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Freezing rain is wreaking havoc across the Pacific Northwest.
A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for Western Whatcom and Skagit Counties, the San Juans, and Point Roberts until 10 p.m. tonight, Friday, December 23rd.
Heavy mixed precipitation, including up to a tenth of an inch of ice, is expected to fall throughout the day.
Road conditions are already slick, with ice on top of compacted snow making things worse.
If you do not have to travel today, please stay home.
Local authorities are monitoring current weather conditions, but they are also looking at the possibility of dangerous conditions as we head into the holiday weekend.
The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office says that with temperatures expected to rise into the 50s, snowmelt will elevate water levels across the region’s rivers.
That, coupled with significant precipitation and mostly frozen ground, could increase the risk of flooding.
At this time, there are not any flood watches in effect, but officials are asking people to stay vigilant as temperatures rise.
For folks living closer to the coast, King Tides, or extremely high tides, are also possible.
