Wildfires force evacuations in Okanogan County, south of Spokane

OROVILLE, Wash. – A wildfire straddling the Canadian border is forcing evacuations in Okanogan County.

State fire officials have mobilized crews to tackle the Eagle Bluff Fire, which was reported on Saturday afternoon, July 29th.

The Washington State Department of Natural Resources says that fire has burned over 10,000 acres near the border towns of Oroville in Washington and Osoyoos in BC.

Levels 2 and 3 evacuations are in effect for parts of those areas.

FEMA has also authorized federal funds to help fight the blaze.

And a fast-moving wildfire that ignited near Spokane is also prompting mandatory evacuations.

The West Hallett Fire started about 1:30 p.m. Monday, July 31st, and had high potential for growth, according to the state DNR.

At least 20 homes are being threatened by the flames.

Levels 2 and 3 evacuations are in effect for some areas south of Spokane.

Fourteen planes were dropping water and retardant on the flames, which had burned more than 200 acres by about 5:30 p.m.

No buildings have been destroyed and no injuries have been reported.
