Snowboarder dies at the Mount Baker Ski Area

MOUNT BAKER SKI AREA, Wash. – A snowboarder died after getting trapped by heavy snow in a treacherous part of the Mount Baker Ski Area.

Mount Baker CEO Gwyn Howat said that the unidentified 44-year-old man was found by another group of riders around 11:15 on Saturday morning, December 10th.

The riders noticed part of his board sticking out of the heavy snow in the Pan Dome extreme danger zone cliff area and called for help.

Mount Baker Ski Patrol officials attempted life-saving measures, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Howat added that the man’s death was caused by deep snow immersion, not an avalanche.

The part of the Pan Dome where the man was found is considered an “extreme” and “rarely frequented” part of the Mount Baker Ski Area.

Howat recommends studying up on deep snow safety before you head out on the trails.
