BELLINGHAM, WA. – (KGMI.com) Rite Aid has filed for bankruptcy and plans to sell part of its business, just a month after it announced the closure of two Bellingham stores.

The company said on Saturday, October 14th, that its stores will continue to fill prescriptions during the process of its bankruptcy protection.

The filing will speed up its plan to close underperforming stores as the company looks to shrink its current debt.

Rite Aid says it expects a net loss of as much as $680 million in the current fiscal year, which ends next spring.

The company has also been struggling amid several federal lawsuits implicating them in the opioid crisis.

Two Rite Aid locations in Bellingham, one downtown and one on Telegraph Road, closed last month.

Three locations are left in Bellingham on Sunset Drive, Northwest Avenue and Sehome Village.
