BELLINGHAM, Wash. – A Lummi Story Pole has been restored and returned to its place in front of the Whatcom County Courthouse.

The restoration work began after the pole was damaged by vandals in 2021.

The Bellingham Herald reports the pole depicts a Lummi chief and his brother escorting Henry Roeder and Russell Peabody as they scout locations for a sawmill in 1852.

The pole and its canoe base were created in 1952 to commemorate that event.

Felix Solomon of Lummi Nation and an artist from Alaska removed dry rot and repainted the pole.
