BELLINGHAM – A small plane trying to land at Bellingham International Airport had to make an emergency landing on the beach below the runway.
The antique aircraft reported engine problems on landing, so the pilot used his training to put the plane down on Locust Beach.
“The tower offered assistance and at that point the pilot indicated that he would not be able to make it to the airport, and that he was going to have to make an off-airport landing. The airplane then subsequently either lost partial power or all power. We do not know yet. And the pilot was able to deploy the landing gear and land the airplane.” says KGMI Aviation Expert Jeffery Lustick.
It ended up in about three feet of water in Bellingham Bay.
The pilot was the only person on board and he wasn’t hurt.
