Orca who carried dead calf gives birth to healthy calf

FRIDAY HARBOR, Wash. — The Southern Resident orca who became famous for carrying her dead calf for 17 days has given birth.

The Center for Whale Research says the orca known as Tahlequah, or J35, likely gave birth on Friday.

The new calf appeared healthy, swimming vigorously alongside its mother.

With this new calf, designated as J57, the Southern Resident population now numbers 73
