Not an Asian Giant Hornet: Imposter wasp reported

OLYMPIA, Wash. — Sightings of Asian Giant Hornets continue, but the state Department of Agriculture points out a new imposter.

WSDA says the Horntail wasp — also known as the wood wasp — is mistakenly being reported as a Asian Giant Hornet.

The wood wasp is large like a hornet, but has much different coloring and doesn’t have the same type of head as a murder hornet.

The department still encourages the public to report a sighting or evidence of a hive attack.

Visit WSDA’s Asian Giant Hornet site for more information for identification, trapping and reporting suspected Asian Giant Hornet activity.
