Lummi Nation receiving federal funding for language preservation

LUMMI NATION, WA. – (KGMI.com) The Lummi Nation has received a federal grant aimed at preserving native languages.

The federal Bureau of Indian Affairs says that over $5.7 million in language preservation grants has been awarded to 20 tribes and tribal organizations.

Of that total, the Lummi Nation will receive $296,000 each year for the next three years.

The Living Languages Grant Program offers funding to help tribes reintroduce and document native languages within their communities.

The most recent round of grants is meant to create and maintain native language reintroduction programs.
