WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. – The weekend’s rain has caused some additional flooding in Everson and Sumas but there hasn’t been significant damage or large numbers of evacuations.

Ferndale has also seen effects from high water.

John Gargett with Whatcom Emergency Management says they’re keeping an eye on the next system, which is forecast to bring about two more inches of rain to Whatcom County on Tuesday, November 30th.

But he says we could see more.

“Depending on how the weather system up over Vancouver Island goes, that may shift south a little bit,” says Gargett. “In which case, we could get over double that amount of rain. So right now we feel pretty good.”

They’re keeping their fingers crossed as the ground is soaked and the region has no more capacity to absorb more water.

A flood warning is in effect for Whatcom County until 10 a.m. today, Tuesday, November 30th.

A number of road closures continue in Whatcom County due to flooding and its effects.

Highway 9 is still closed north of Nugents Corner and in Sumas.

Hannegan is still closed south of Lynden because of water over the road as is Slater west of I-5.

Birch Bay Lynden Road remains closed near Hamm Road because of damage from the initial flood.

You can find updates on all the county’s road closures on the Whatcom County website.
