Flood damage to Sumas Elementary School leaves students in limbo

SUMAS, Wash. – Officials at Sumas Elementary School are offering a grim prognosis on the state of their building.

Nooksack Valley Superintendent Matt Galley told KING5 that floodwaters took such a massive toll on the elementary school that it likely won’t reopen.

“It’s just heartbreaking to see the amount of loss and the amount of devastation,” said Galley.

Galley added that remote learning isn’t an option for impacted students, as most of the school’s laptops were destroyed by floodwaters.

“You know, we have kids that are afraid of rain right now,” said Galley. “And wondering if that next rain is going to bring a flood into their home.”

At least 160 students have been displaced by the floods and will be attending other elementary schools as construction on a new building continues.
