POINT ROBERTS, Wash. – Federal funding will add better internet service to Whatcom County’s exclave.

Earlier this month, Senator Patty Murray announced that over $11 million will go to the Whidbey Telephone Company for their internet expansion projects in Point Roberts.

Over 47 miles of underground fiber cables and another 63 miles of underwater cables will be installed to connect more underserved communities with high-speed internet.

Thousands of residents on Whidbey Island, the Lummi Nation, and in San Juan County will also see better connections after the project is complete.

According to the U.S. Census, 1 in 10 Washington residents do not have an internet connection in their homes.

A timeline for the project’s construction has not been released.
