BLAINE, Wash. – New technology being used by Customs and Border Protection helped stop an imposter from entering the U.S. late last month.
The CBP said in a press release that officers were alerted to an issue with a passenger at a bus terminal in Blaine the day after Thanksgiving.
Border patrol officers were using the Simplified Arrival process on passengers at the station, where facial recognition technology is used to verify identities.
However, officers said the passenger in question did not match the facial profile on her passport.
The passenger later admitted to authorities that she had used her sister’s passport and COVID vaccination card to try to cross the border because she was not vaccinated.
The Border Patrol says the Simplified Arrival process is over 98% effective in verifying travelers’ identities.
