BELLINGHAM, Wash. — The City of Bellingham has won EPA awards for the upgrade to its drinking water purification system and the re-routing of Squalicum Creek.
One award was for a system installed at the Whatcom Falls Park water treatment plant, which removes algae from water drawn from Lake Whatcom.
Removing algae helps the filters remain unclogged, increasing the output of treated water and ending the expensive process of backwashing those filters.
The other award is for the re-routing of Squalicum Creek to increase stream flows, lower water temperatures, and improve habitat for endangered chinook and steelhead salmon.
The awards were given at Monday night’s City Council meeting.
