SEATTLE, Wash. — University of Washington facilities staff have found a deadly mushroom growing on the Seattle campus, and the school is warning everyone to be cautious with mushrooms.

UW Environmental Health and Safety says the aptly-named “death cap” mushrooms look similar to edible mushrooms but contain amanita toxins which can cause liver failure, kidney failure and death.

Anyone who sees the mushrooms on campus is asked to contact facilities staff.

The Washington Poison Center has also posted seasonal warnings about mushrooms to look out for.

Further information about these mushrooms including pictures in various stages of development is available on the UW website.
