BELLINGHAM, Wash. – A Bellingham man whose newborn son starved to death is headed to prison.

A jury found 29-year-old Cody James Shields guilty in July of 2nd degree manslaughter in the death of Lucian Shields.

The three-month-old was found dead in December 2015 in the apartment Shields shared with the boy’s mother and another child.

The couple told investigators that they fed Lucian regularly but the medical examiner found he was severely malnourished and dehydrated.

The Bellingham Herald reports Shields was sentenced in Whatcom Superior Court on Thursday, March 10th, to two years in prison and 18 months probation.

Lucian’s mother, 28-year-old Brittany Shane Daniels, was sentenced to a year-and-a-half in prison in 2020 for the boy’s death.
