CUSTER, Wash. — Whatcom County continues to be ground zero for Asian giant hornets in the U.S.

The state Department of Agriculture says the male was found in one of their traps on July 29.

It was close to where a dead mated queen was found earlier this year and where a bee kill was reported last November.

The department’s entomologist says the invasive hornets are becoming more active and they’re hoping to capture live specimens that could lead them to their nests.

Seven Asian giant hornets have now been found in Washington, all in Whatcom County.
